Ball hone for moly rings. Due to finances last year was the first that we ve used a ball hone. Not sure ring type. Haven t run the car yet so don t know the result but by looking at the ring specs 320 was recommended for moly. Iron cylinder ring type.
It has been our experience that the use of 220 280 grit stones and achieving proper cross hatch angle produces a finish compatible to all three types of the above rings. Our best seller to commercial engine rebuilders and power sports shops is the 240 grit hone. For moly faced rings i use a 400 grit ball hone with wd40 8 10 quick strokes reverse the drill and 8 10 more quick strokes. Do you guys have a recommendation for rings.
This last build used a 320 ball hone. Ball hone how to get the perfect finish for piston ring sealing the ball hone is self centering self aligning to the bore and self compensating for wear. I will be running forged pistons. Ball hones provide a great surface finish and will make your next re ring job a success.
I remember that back in the day the machine shop had to hone the block different for moly faced rings vs cast iron rings. 320 grit excellent for re ringing jobs or final bore utilizing performance or moly rings. I am thinking the 240 grit should work but want to make sure. This brand new sealed in package commercial version engine cylinder hone is for 3 825 to 4 055 bores.
I am using total seal cr plasma moly rings and would like to know what grit hone would work best when freshening my short block. Is this still the rule or was this an old wives tale. Our guidelines are as follows. Also are plain moly rings better than plasma moly for the typical street performance motor.
240 or 320 grit. We use moly rings and by mistake used a br 240 ball hone. 180 or 240 grit. I like to follow with a nylon brush and clean with atf.
The ball hone tool is great if you are only trying to freshen a cylinder prior to re ringing. Substantial controversy exists on the correct cylinder roughness for proper seating of piston rings whether chrome moly or plain cast iron. Motor ran fine but leak down was much more than we d seen.
