A film obtained at 15 minutes after administration of contrast shows a wavy renal outline with tracks of contrast extending from fornix ring shadows caused by the sloughing of papillae and an egg in a cup appearance characteristic of renal papillary necrosis. Lesions that characterize renal papillary necrosis come from an impairment of the blood supply and from subsequent ischemic necrosis that is diffuse. Clinical presentation patients can present with both acute episodes or chronic renal papillary necrosis.
